چکیده

In this paper we compare the performance of opaque and translucent Optical Transport Networks (OTNs) taking into account different regenerator placement strategies. The translucent approach achieves noticeable results under static traffic in terms of saving of deployed resources. On the other hand in the dynamic scenario a translucent OTN suffers from fewer resources and may display high blocking probability. We describe our planning procedure that is composed of two main steps: the first one selects a subset of network nodes that can host regeneration devices solving the Regenerator Placement Problem (RPP) by the means of three different heuristic allocation algorithms; the second one computes the amount of resources (number of transponders and DWDM systems) accomplishing the Routing and Wavelength Assignment with Regenerator Problem (RWA-RP) to satisfy a given set of static traffic demands. This dimensioning procedure is applied both to a translucent and to an opaque implementation of the same OTN showing the CAPEX benefit of the first approach. Subsequently both translucent and opaque versions of the OTN are simulated under dynamic traffic, displaying the greater robustness of the opaque case to blocking, no matter what regenerator placement algorithm has been adopted. To back up this conclusion we carried out a further analysis on the power consumption.

Dynamic routing in translucent WDM optical networks

Translucent WDM optical networks use sparse placement of regenerators to overcome the impairments and wavelength contention introduced by fully transparent networks, and achieve a performance close to fully opaque networks with much less cost. Our previous study proved the feasibility of translucent networks using sparse regeneration technique. We addressed the placement of regenerators based o...

Novel Strategies for Sparse Regenerator Placement and Allocation in Translucent Optical Networks

In this paper we propose one allocation strategy and two strategies for sparse regenerator placement in translucent optical networks, namely Most Used Regenerator Placement (MURP) and Most Simultaneous Used Regenerator Placement (MSURP). The novel regenerators placement algorithms are compared with other ones presented in literature. They are tested on the proposed regenerator allocation algori...

Dynamic lightpath provisioning with signal quality guarantees in survivable translucent optical networks.

This paper studies the problem of signal-quality-guaranteed lightpath provisioning in survivable translucent optical networks under dynamic traffic. A new protection scheme, called regeneration-segment protection (RSP), is proposed. Provisioning approaches with shared path protection and shared RSP are presented. Two main signal quality constraints are integrated with the provisioning problem. ...

An analysis of Regenerator Placement strategies for a Translucent OBS network architecture

Most research works in optical burst switching (OBS) networks do not take into account the impact of physical layer impairments (PLIs) either by considering fully transparent (i.e., using optical 3R regeneration) or opaque (i.e., electrical 3R regeneration) networks. However, both solutions are not feasible for different reasons. In this paper, we propose a novel translucent OBS (T-OBS) network...

Exact Approach for Survivable Regenerator Placement in Translucent WDM Networks

Most studies addressing translucent network design targeted a tradeoff between minimizing the number of deployed regenerators and minimizing the number of regeneration sites. The latter highly depends on the carrier’s strategy and is motivated by various considerations such as power consumption, maintenance and supervision costs. However, concentrating regenerators into a small number of nodes ...
